African-American art draws on a rich cultural heritage. One of the most popular current practitioners of the form is Tim Ashkar, a self-taught artist born in 1974. Ashkar uses lush colors in his work to accompany the mural-like framing of his subjects. His "A Summer" depicts figures in a relaxed atmosphere. The figures stand, sit and socialize at an outdoor gathering resplendent with flowers and hanging lights. In "Child with Watering Can," we see a happy boy providing nourishment to the gorgeous foliage around him. Set against a sturdy brick wall and deep blue sky, the child is the picture of bliss.
Many artists working in this genre attempt to capture on canvas the magic of music. "Showtime" and "Out Chorus" by Romare Bearden show musical scenes with broad, expressive lines and strong colors. The pieces have a collage-like quality that encapsulates the overlapping nature of musical performances.
Charles Bibbs also emphasizes music in pieces like "Bjazzin II," "Jazzin" and "Jammin." In these pieces, figures playing instruments (mostly horns) are set against white backgrounds. These blank backgrounds serve to heighten the effects that the colors and the exaggeration of the figures (and their saxophones and double basses) have on the viewer.
