| Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh is as famous for his eccentric life as he is his paintings. His work, of course, is the ultimate reason for the continued interest in him; were he not a highly regarded artist, his personal foibles would be of little consequence to the modern audience. Van Gogh was able to create lasting masterpieces despite extremely limited support; his paintings did not sell during his lifetime, and the recognition of his genius in the art world was similarly posthumous.
Van Gogh is best known for the painting "The Starry Night" ("La Notte Stellata"), in which huge, pinwheeling stars careen across a skyline. The use of stars actually occurs numerous times in his work. "Starry Night over the Rhone" depicts heavy yellow stars hovering over the Rhone river; the stars and lights on the shore fill the inky water with potent light. "Cafe Terrace at Night" also features stars, though they play more of a supporting role in the piece. The scene features deserted tables at the outer edge of an otherwise busy cafe; the viewer can hardly help but be drawn into the scene due to curiosity regarding the activity on the other side of the terrace.
Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" series also incorporates bright, brash colors into an otherwise innocuous scene. The "Sunflowers" burst with life, threatening to grow right off the canvas. The boldness of the execution of these still-lives make them incredibly kinetic and powerful.
Many of Van Gogh's pieces, including those in the "Starry Night series," make great use of textures available to the painter. Paint is slathered onto the canvas to create an incredibly potent effect. Prints can't always capture the three-dimensional aspect of such pieces. Here at ARTinaClick.com, we offer not only a number of different lithographs of Van Gogh works, but also hand-painted oil reproductions for those looking to fully experience these incredible works.
