"Girl Defending Herself Against Love" by William Adolphe Bouguereau - Famed Print
"Adoration of the Shepherds" by Nicolas Poussin - Famed Print

Classicism is a style that when applied generally, means clarity, elegance, symmetry and repose produced by attention to traditional forms. A literal application of the style refers to the admiration and imitation of Greek and Roman art. Because the principles of classicism were derived from the rules and practices of the ancients, the term came to mean the adherence to specific academic canons. The first return to classical ideas occurred during the Renaissance. Other classical artists include, William-Adolphe Bouguereau's Girl Defending Herself Against Love and Nicolas Poussin's Adoration of the Sheperds.
